Home: splits time between family estate in Lancashire and his lodgings in London.

Alexander Staunton inherited the earldom at the age of twenty-four, and with it came the responsibility for taking care of his mother, his brother, his sister, and his ward. The responsibility forced him to grow up, and since inheriting the earldom he has increased his family’s holdings and set up his brother with a plantation in Bermuda. • Birthday: 11 April 1782

Age (in AN INCONVENIENT MARRIAGE): 30

Physical characteristics: Red hair (very stylishly cut), blue eyes, medium build with perfect proportions that show to advantage in his fancy waistcoats and breeches.

Occupation/interests: Public persona: dissolute heir to the duke of Harwich; private persona: unoffical, desperate laird for the Ferguson clan and estate.

Home: Grew up on his mother’s estate in the Scottish Highlands; technically, his ancestral home is at Harwich on the east coast of England.

William Avenel Ferguson Stafford, earl of Rothwell, never expected to inherit his father’s estate. But after his two older half-brothers died, he was next in line to the dukedom, to both his and his father’s immense displeasure. Ferguson hates his father — and the feeling is mutual — but he will do anything to reverse the damage that his father has done to his mother’s ancestral Scottish estate. If that includes going to England and making peace with his father, he will do it — but only on his own terms…

  • Birthday: 24 February 1788

Age (in AN INCONVENIENT MARRIAGE): 23

Physical characteristics: Black hair, green eyes; slight French accent that becomes more noticeable when she is upset or excited.

Occupation/interests: No occupation; she spends most of her time trying to be useful to her surrogate family.

Home: Born in southern France to the comte and comtesse de Loubressac; has lived with the Stauntons since she was five.

Madeleine Vaillant was smuggled out of France by a loyal nursemaid at the height of the Reign of Terror. Her parents sent her to stay with the Stauntons, their closest English friends, and apparently lost their lives to the guillotine. With the continued warfare in France, she has never been able to return to her native home, although dreams of her childhood still haunt her. She hides her sadness well, and most people find her to be cheerful and agreeable. She and Amelia Staunton share a sister-like bond, but Amelia’s marriage will force her to reconsider her life.
